California requires an automotive repair dealer to provide a written or electronic estimate before performing repairs. An estimate is not required for preventive-maintenance services if the customer authorizes the service and either it's performed free of charge or the total price is displayed conspicuously and acknowledged by the customer. The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) regulates estimate, work-order, and invoice content in detail, including electronic-authorization procedures adopted in 2018.
